Whatever your interests-survival training, flight training, photography, astronomy-there's a place for you in CAP's cadet program. Each year, cadets have the opportunity to participate in special activities at the local, state, regional or national level. Many cadets will have the opportunity to solo fly an airplane for the first time through a flight encampment or academy. Others will enjoy traveling abroad through the International Air Cadet Exchange Program. Still others assist at major air shows throughout the nation.
My son Joseph joined the cadet program in Hillsborough, NJ a few months ago and has already flown a plane for an hour towards New York City and back during his first of many orientation flights. He attends weekly meeting to learn different aspects of aeronautics and leadership skills. They completed the first phase of the study of rocketry last week (Alka-Seltzer, rubber band and compressed air rockets). There are two more phases of rocketry classes coming up including Estes motorized model rockets kits. Once a month his CAP meeting includes Physical Training (PT). He’s preparing to attend a week long encampment at McGuire Air Force Base soon to learn more essential skills that will help him for a lifetime.
During the week long encampment, cadets will attend classes covering topics such as US Air Force structure and mission, aerospace power, and aerospace heritage; CAP emergency services, aerospace education, and the cadet program; and aerospace career opportunities and requirements. Cadets will participate in physical fitness and drill and ceremonies activities daily. We are planning orientation flights in CAP and military aircrafts, when available, provide the chance for cadets to experience flying first hand. Throughout all activities, the values of discipline, teamwork, personal responsibility, sportsmanship, confidence, and respect are taught and encouraged. New Jersey Wing has been conducting Basic Encampments for decades.
While there are many youth oriented programs in America today, CAP's cadet program is unique in that it uses aviation as a cornerstone. Thousands of young people from 12 years through age 21 are introduced to aviation through CAP's cadet program. The program allows young people to progress at their own pace through a 16-step program including aerospace education, leadership training, physical fitness and moral leadership. Cadets compete for academic scholarships to further their studies in fields such as engineering, science, aircraft mechanics, aerospace medicine, meteorology, as well as many others. Those cadets who earn cadet officer status may enter the Air Force as an E3 (airman first class) rather than an E1 (airman basic).
CAP members join through a local cadet squadron. The best way to learn more about what you can do in CAP is to attend a meeting. You’ll have a chance to see how meetings are run and what types of activities are available. You should visit all the squadrons that are convenient to you. Each squadron has a different leadership, culture and volunteer opportunities. Find the squadron that best fits your needs. The local CAP squadron should provide you with a membership application, inform you of the amount of annual dues, and if they require any squadron dues. Annual membership dues vary by state.
